Biggs Hired As New Men’s Soccer Assistant Coach
New Addition To Coaching Staff Hails From UAB
CINCINNATI – Xavier head men’s soccer coach Andy Fleming has announced the hiring of former University of Alabama at Birmingham player and assistant coach Michael Biggs to fill the vacancy left by Alex Morawiecki who left to pursue other coaching options.
Morawiecki worked with the Musketeer program for the past two seasons and helped capture its first two Atlantic 10 Championships and consecutive berths in the NCAA Tournament. Biggs joins the program after playing for four years at UAB and four years as a coach.
“First and foremost I want to thank Alex for his service to our university and soccer program,” Fleming said. “He is a great friend, a class act, and a wonderful person who leaves us with many memories and big shoes to fill.”
“On the other hand it gives me great pleasure and excitement to welcome Michael to our soccer family. He quickly emerged from a poll of quality candidates and is a great fit for our program and the dynamic staff.”
Biggs was a four-year letterwinner at UAB and played in 65 games during his career, tallying one goal and two assists as a defender. During his senior season, Biggs was voted by his teammates to be a captain and eventually helped the Blazers earn an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament. During his sophomore year he was part of a team that knocked off then unbeaten and No. 1 Southern Methodist. He is also one of few players to receive the UAB Coaches Award twice.
“I really respect the program at UAB for which he both played and coached and the tutelage that he received from UAB head coach Mike Getman,” Fleming said. “However, it was his story as a player that shows that he is a Xavier type of guy who embodies many of the winning qualities that has allowed this program to grow so quickly.
“He is someone who overachieved and worked his way into a starting position and captain’s role on a Top 25 team, while being an honor student and getting a master’s degree.”
He began the coaching portion of his career after graduating from UAB in 2007 with a degree in mathematics. He served as an administrative assistant from 2007 to 2009 before taking on the role of volunteer assistant coach for the 2010 and 2011 season. He also coached for the Vestavia Hills Soccer Club for four seasons.
“The things that stood out to me about Michael are that he paid his dues and worked his way up the coaching ladder, showing that he truly wants to be a coach,” Fleming said. “He has a strong background in marketing and is savvy in the office, the field, evaluating talent. He also has an easy going personality that will fit in nicely as well.”
Biggs earned his masters in business administration from UAB and is a Birmingham native.
