Russo Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors

BIG EAST Conference awards sophomore for her outstanding play

CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati sophomore lacrosse goalkeeper Katherine Russo (Westminster, Md./Winter Mills) was named the BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Week after her outstanding performances in the first two games of the season for the Bearcats.

“This is a great reward for Katherine after an impressive weekend in goal,” said third-year head coach Lellie Swords. “It’s not surprising that she set a new school record for saves as she sets her goals high and does what is needed to achieve them.”

Russo earned her first victory of the season by allowing only four goals and recording seven saves at Detroit. The Bearcats won 10-6 against the Titans.

Against Duquesne, Russo set a new school record by recording 23 saves in the Bearcats 14-13 double overtime loss to Duquesne. The previous record was 17 saves, set by Russo last season and Jen Mott in the 2008 season.

Russo’s performance against Duquesne was even more impressive because five of her saves came in the overtime periods. She made a clutch save on a free position attempt with 11 seconds left in the first overtime period that kept the Bearcats in the game.

Russo’s honor is the second time that a Cincinnati player has earned a weekly conference honor after the first week of play in a season. Last season, Laura Simanski was named the BIG EAST’s Offensive Player of the Week after the opening week of play for the Bearcats.

Cincinnati will return to action on Saturday, March 13, when they host Presbyterian College at Noon in Nippert Stadium.

Bearcats Bounce USF in First-Round Upset

http://grfx.cstv.com/graphics/spacer.gifhttp://grfx.cstv.com/graphics/spacer.gif

HARTFORD, Conn. - Kahla Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) scored a game-high 19 points to lead the University of Cincinnati women's basketball team to a 63-51 win against USF in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Friday night in the XL Center.

Shareese Ulis (Toledo, Ohio/Trinity Valley C.C.) added 17 and Shanasa Sanders (Jacksonville, Fla./Ribault Senior) chipped in 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds to help the 14th-seeded Bearcats (12-17) to the first-round upset.

KeNeisha Saunders led the Bulls (15-15) with 14 points and six rebounds.

The Beacats have won two straight BIG EAST Championship first-round matchups, defeating Marquette, 60-54, in the 2009 tournament before falling in the second round to USF.

Roudebush, who was honored on court prior to the game for her selection to the all-BIG EAST second team, came out on fire. She hit three of her first four shots, including a pair of threes early in the first.

After falling behind 2-0 and 4-2, the Bearcats used a 14-6 spurt to take a 16-10 lead on Roudebush's second three. The lead swelled to 28-20 on a Daress McClung (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) layup with 4:13 to play in the half.

Ulis drove to her left and scored on a layup while being fouled. She completed the three-point play to give the Bearcats a 10-point lead - its largest of the half - going into the lockerroom at 36-26.

USF scored the first five points of the second half, all by Saunders, but UC answered with an 8-3 run of its own to push the lead back to double digits at 44-34 with 14:14 to go.

The Bulls twice cut the lead to six and were threatening after a 4-0 run made it 51-45 with 7:12 remaining. USF didn't score again until the 1:40 mark after an 11-0 run for Cincinnati, placing the Bearcats in firm control. UC shot 18-of-24 from the free throw line, including 6-of-8 during the deciding run.

The Bearcats shot 40 percent from the floor and outrebounded the taller Bulls, 35-28. Jessica Lawson, USF's first-team all-BIG EAST center, tallied just eight points and six rebounds, thanks to suffocating defense from Michelle Jones (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and the rest of UC's frontcourt. Lawson came into the game averaging 14.4 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest and posted 17 double-doubles during the regular season, including 22 points and 12 rebounds against Cincinnati on Jan. 30.

Jones finished with six points and four rebounds in 31 minutes.

Roudebush Earns Second-Team All-BIG EAST Honors

http://grfx.cstv.com/graphics/spacer.gifhttp://grfx.cstv.com/graphics/spacer.gif

HARTFORD, Conn. - University of Cincinnati senior guard Kahla Roudebush (Noblesville, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) was named to the all-BIG EAST second team on Thursday (March 4), the conference announced on the eve of the 2010 BIG EAST Championship.

Roudebush earns the honor for the second straight season and becomes the first UC women's basketball player to earn multiple all-BIG EAST honors.

The fifth-year senior, who led the Bearcats and ranked 13th in the BIG EAST in scoring at 13.6 points per game, ranks in the Top 10 in school history in eight statistical categories. She is 10th in career scoring - having moved past Debbie Merrill in UC's last outing against Marquette on March 1 - with 1,425 points. She also ranks in the Top 10 in career free throw percentage (6th, .778), field goal attempts (10th, 1,165), games played (10th, 116), and minutes played (7th, 3,537).

Roudebush is second in school history in three-point percentage (.377) and third in both threes made (194) and threes attempted (515). She has led the Bearcats in scoring in each of the last three seasons and has rarely come off the floor. Over the last three seasons (87 games), she has averaged 37.0 minutes per contest, including playing 38.5 minutes per game in 2008-09, which led the BIG EAST and ranked No. 8 in the nation.

Roudebush has been even more productive in BIG EAST play this season, averaging 15.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and shooting .403 from beyond the three-point arc and .828 from the free throw line. She averaged 38.8 minutes per game in conference play, being on the floor for 620 of a possible 655 minutes.

A three-time BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recipient in 2009-10, Roudebush is just the second UC player to earn all-BIG EAST honors, following guard Treasure Humphries, who was named to the second team following the 2005-06 season.

An Angel Robinson jumper at the horn was off and the game headed to overtime.

Marquette scored the first four points of overtime before a Ulis jumper made it 61-59 with 2:08 to go. A steal by McMorris and layup for Thomas-Johnson at the other end gave MU a 63-59 lead with 1:26 to go.
