                                                    Making Others Better

PROVERBS 11:25—The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.

It is always amazing how the scriptures, which were written, long, long ago come alive with relevance and power. A liberal soul is directly translated as a generous spirit. The scripture says that not only will the generous prosper, but that they will be satisfied. Liberal people give freely to those in need. God shows time and time again that he loves a cheerful giver. Generosity is not just a haphazard action with little or no planning or forethought. It involves carefully managing resources, good stewardship, so that you can freely give. You will never be satisfied if your giving is neither cheerful nor well conceived. The first step in generosity is to first execute fulfilling your basic needs so that the overflow of resources can be freely given. A stingy person is not actually one who does not give, but a person who has abundance and still chooses not to give. Generous souls have learned that the exchange of giving is how you prosper. You give and it shall be given back to you in multiple doses. This is certainly not only a concept or principle relating to only money—although it works very well in the financial world. You should choose to be liberal with your time, talents and gifts also. How many times have you heard a person complain about a lack of time to give to something or someone? It is almost always a time management issue and gets back to the original question of good stewardship. Too many times terms like generosity, prosperity and stewardship are improperly thought of as strictly money related. Stewardship is an individual’s responsibility to manage his life and finances with proper regard to others. The end of that definition is very important. Sounds like handling my business to create an overflow so that I can give cheerfully and freely to those in need. The proper regard to others (generosity) can only take place if you manage your time, talent, gifts and money carefully. The second part of the scripture is equally as powerful and relevant. God states that if a person waters, refreshes or helps another that they will be refreshed or helped. Simply put if a person has needs, we all do, then the best thing to do is to water or refresh someone else. The exchange principle will kick in and your help is definitely on the way.

Let’s take an example that occurs all the time in the teaching and coaching field. A student or player is talented at a particular skill. It may even be a situation where it is God given ability, but they are ahead of everyone with this resource. Teachers and coaches love it when the instruction not only takes place from them, but is shared by the members of the class or team. The liberal or generous soul will know that sharing the time, talent and/or gifts will be exchanged for their own prosperity. Those things will be given back more abundantly. The stingy person thinks that if they help someone else that it will somehow hurt them, the helper. Or if they share what they know that the person could possibly pass them by. They need to get it in their spirit that God is looking for generous souls, so that he can bless and prosper them. Just think if you were given, from God, an over abundance of time, talent, gifts and money. He has those things to return to the ones that are willing to give freely after carefully managing their resources. Have you ever wondered why some folks who have time, talent and/ or money but are never satisfied? Well now you know the difference between full and satisfied. To reach satisfaction God says you must be generous in giving of your stuff. Give and it WILL be given, watereth and you SHALL be watered, and last but not least, be generous and you WILL prosper and be satisfied.
