:
Larkin Elected to Baseball Hall of Fame
January 9, 2012 — Former Reds great Barry Larkin was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame after he received 86 percent of the ballot. The Cincinnati native played for his hometown team for 19 seasons, compiling a lifetime average of .295 with 198 home runs, 960 RBIs, 2,340 hits, a .371 on-base percentage and 379 stolen bases.

Larkin also was a 12-time All-Star, a three-time Gold Glove winner and a nine-time Silver Slugger winner at shortstop, a member of the 1990 World Series championship team and the 1995 National League Most Valuable Player. In 1996, Larkin became the first shortstop in Major League history to be a 30-30 player when he had 33 homers and 36 steals during that season.

Larkin will join the late Cubs great Ron Santo as a 2012 Hall of Famer when the two are inducted into the Hall in Cooperstown on July 22. Santo, who died last year, was elected last month by the special Golden Era committee.

Reds trade for right-hander Mat Latos
December 17, 2011 – The Reds and Padres announced a five-player deal today, as Cincinnati acquired 24-year-old right-hander Mat Latos in exchange for right-hander Edinson Volquez and three prospects.

"Mat is a big, strong young pitcher with electric stuff," Walt Jocketty said of the 6-6, 224-pound righthander. "We consider him to be a potential number one starter who, contractually, we have under control for four more years. To acquire a pitcher who is ready to fit into the top of a rotation, you have to give up talent."

Latos went had 3.47 ERA and .233 average against in 31 starts for San Diego last season. In 2010, his first full season in the Majors, he set a modern Major League record by allowing two-runs-or-fewer in 15 straight starts of five-or-more innings pitched, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
