St. Ursula Academy Names 2011 Respect the   Game Winner

Annual Award Recognizes Good Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity

Cincinnati, Ohio, March 28, 2010 – St. Ursula Academy’s Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Committee has announced the 2010-2011 winner of the “Respect the Game” award that recognizes individuals who display good sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in high school sports.

The winner for the winter 2011 is a student, SUA senior Nicole Cabell ’11 of Hyde Park. The recipient does not have to be an SUA athlete and could be a coach, a parent, an official or even a person from outside our SUA community.

Miss Cabell has shown dedication to SUA athletics through her commitment in many areas. She played volleyball for the Bulldogs her freshman year and was a part of the Aquadawgs during her junior year.  During her sophomore year she began helping with the game clock and scoreboard during home basketball games and that progressed into becoming the statistician for basketball during her junior year.  In her senior year Nicole was statistician for volleyball in the fall and basketball in the winter.

She has served as a GAA board member the past two years, has been involved with the Dawg Squad and teamed up with senior Katie Wooliver ’11 to manage the collection of “spirit points”.

In addition, Miss Cabell was a part of the community service program In-School Service Events (ISSE) during her sophomore year, Prom co-coordinator during her junior and senior year, has volunteered in the Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) mentoring program during her junior and senior year, participated in Student Outreach Services (SOS) - Helping Hands and is a member of the National Honor Society during her senior year. Nicole is currently serving as one of the student volunteers on SUA’s Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Committee.

“We thank Nicole for her dedication and for her many contributions to our Bulldog community,” said SUA Athletic Director Mike Sipes.

SUA is committed to ethics and integrity in athletics and rewards good sportsmanship. It has a formal Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Committee that sets the standards and selects the award recipients. In fact, St. Ursula is the only GGCL school in Cincinnati to have received the prestigious Harold A. Meyer Sportsmanship Award by the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) and has won it six consecutive years!

To further advance St. Ursula Academy’s ongoing effort to promote sportsmanship within the school and point out positive examples, the SUA Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Committee developed this award in the fall of 2009.

The criteria for a Respect the Game nomination is as follows:

-The recipient demonstrates a high level of sportsmanship every day.
-They understand the importance of high school athletics as valuable and as such it is worthy of respect.
-The person acts with courtesy, dignity and pride.
-They demonstrate the importance of putting others ahead of themselves in an ongoing effort to practice the importance of teamwork.
-The recipient’s attitude is able to sway others to follow her and her methods of demonstrating sportsmanship.

Students from Four Top Area High Schools Trade Places on the Football Field to Raise Money for Leukemia

Cincinnati, Ohio, March 8, 2011 – Next month, Saint Ursula Academy, Ursuline Academy, Saint Xavier High School and Moeller High School will join forces for a first-of-its-kind event to raise money for leukemia research.

On April 2nd, 2011, the four schools will join forces to put on The Orange and White Game at St. Xavier High School.  But this game is no ordinary competition. The Orange and White Game is a fundraising event where students will switch roles.  Rival girls’ schools, Ursuline Academy and Saint Ursula Academy, will go head to head in a flag football game, with two teams composed of seniors from each school. The rival boys’ schools, Moeller High School and Saint Xavier High School, will act as the cheerleaders, competing and performing in the half time show.

All proceeds from this unique and entertaining event will be donated to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center leukemia research. The students from all four schools will sell tickets at school so they can donate as much money to the program as possible. $5 Tickets can be reserved in advance for by emailing CoOtt@saintursula.org. Guests can then pay for and pick up their ticket the day of the game at Will Call. Pre-orders will be taken up until the April 2, 2011. Tickets will also be available for $7.00 at the gate until the stadium reaches its capacity.

The student organizers selected leukemia research at Childrens’ Hospital because a friend and classmate from St. Ursula, Natalie Bradley, lost her battle with leukemia last year.

“This cause is close to our hearts. While all of our schools have friendly rivalries in athletics, we all have a common mission and goal with this project which is to help children fighting leukemia,” said Courtney Ott, an Orange and White game organizer and Student Council Co-President from St. Ursula Academy. “We think it’s going to be a lot of fun and hope everyone can come.”
