Friday evening the Bowling Bombers participated in the U.C. Bearcat High School Classic at Western Bowl. The boys in royal blue and black came out strong in the first game rolling a 1077 team game behind the individual games of: Joey Bruns (Sr.) 248, Chris Hecht (Sr.) 235, Eddie Runkel (Jr.) 214, and Matt Huber (Sr.) 208.

At the start of game two the Bombers found themselves -100 after just three frames. Adjustments were made along with better shot making and the Bombers finished the last 7 frames +10 to finish game two with a 910 team score. Joey Bruns again led all scoring with a 211 while Sophomore Ben Weinberger chipped in a 202. After the two games of regulation bowling St. X found themselves in 1st place by 6 pins over Oak Hills with a two-game score of 1987 heading into the 5 games of baker bowling.

The Bombers bowled a solid 1st game in bakers with a 194 however Oak Hills rolled a 236 to take the tournament lead. In game two a couple of missed spares and a split caused the Bombers to stumble to a 159 while Oak Hills had a 209 to take a commanding lead of 86 pins. The Bombers rose up in games three and four with scores of 219 and 232 to cut into the Highlander lead and reduce it to only 20 pins.

In game five both teams traded strikes but ultimately two pins, a stubborn 7 pin and 10 pin, undid the Bomber rally in the final 5 frames. St. X finished strong with a well bowled 213 but Oak Hills hung on for the win by bowling a 222. Franklin Central snuck between the Bombers and Oak Hills by only 6 pins for 2nd place after finishing 7th in the two-game qualifying.

St. X jumped out to an early lead after game one by rolling a 1059 behind the games of: Senior two-handed bowler Joey Bruns' 256, Sophomore Ben Weinberger's 226 and Senior Chris Hecht's 222. Roger Bacon had a 921 with Senior Nate Frock being high with a 213 and Junior Jake Meiners scoring a 201. Fenwick bowled a 901 with A.J Conway being high with a 226, Junior Andrew Owens (204), and Austin Head (203).

The 2nd game was all Roger Bacon as they reversed the tables on the Bombers with a well bowled 1062 behind Freshman Chris Wilhelm's 238, Frock's 234, Sophomore Stewart Barnes' 215 and Meiner's 214. The Bombers stumbled to a 925 and were led by Sophomores Jonny McQuitty's 248 and Ben Weinberger's 216. Blue Team Regains Confidence Against Clarke Montessori

After a tough loss against Princeton on Tuesday, a gloomy, pessimistic cloud hung around the bombers as they suited up for their match against the Clarke Montessori Cougars on Thursday. Always-optimistic Jake Murnan was all smiles though, and was able to convey some of his optimism to his teammates despite the dark, snowy weather outside Brentwood Bowl. During the first game, Jake Murnan and Andrew Cousineau scored 166 and 185 respectively, and rookie Michael Rich bowled a strong 145. However, the Cougars out-bowled the Bombers in the first game by 19 pins. Luckily, Jake “Turtles” Murnan finished off his series with a 190 for a total 356, Joey Francis got a solid 199 single game, and Mike Brill bowled a match-high 207 for a 365. Andrew Cousineau, however, narrowly stole the high series of the match from him by a one point margin with a 366. That’s just how he rolls. The baker games started off rough for the Bombers, but Jake Murnan put on his happy face and was able to close his frames. Their 282 pin lead from the individual games held, and the Bombers rolled to a 2224-1959 confidence-boosting victory. Mike Brill ’12, SSID

Bombers Unsuccessful at Princeton
Mike Brill ’12, SSID

The “blue team” Bombers arrived at Princeton Bowl Tuesday to face off against the Princeton Vikings. Andrew “Snake” Cousineau, a Princeton grade school graduate and Princeton Bowl frequenter, started off his homecoming with a strong 182. Joey Francis and Steven Brill bowled a 177 and 184 respectively, with teammates Mike Brill, Anthony Hughes, Jake Murnan, Nathan Shrum, and Michael Rich following close behind. The Bombers needed strong baker games to overcome a 200 pin deficit after the first two rounds of individual games. Steven Brill bowled strong in the baker games, along with Joey Francis, who seemed to be least affected by the travel up to Princeton Lanes and rolled multiple strikes. Although the Bombers upped the Vikings by 51 pins in the first baker game, that did not appear in the last three baker games, and the Bombers were defeated Score: Princeton, 2349, Bombers, 2126.

The JV “black” team had a nail-biter of a game led by Tucker Stafford with a 158 game. They narrowly pulled out an 11 pin victory over the Vikings. Congrats to Tucker Stafford, Matt Hein, Robert Faisant, Patrick Hensel, Anthony Bauer, Colton Gebhart, Matt Rieger, Zach Shrum, and Kevin Ballachino on the big win on the JV side of the lanes!

Bombers Finish 2nd in GCL Tournament
By Mark Brockman, '12

The Bowling Bombers headed to Colerain Bowl for Sunday’s GCL tournament. The tournament will serve as a tie breaker if there are any ties in the GCL standings at the end of the year, so the Bombers were looking for a quality finish. The first game of the individual round set the tone for the tournament as the Bombers got a good 933 team score highlighted by junior Eddie Runkel’s 211. A good second game was a must and seniors Chris Hecht and Joey Bruns stepped up with a 213 and a 212 respectively. The 944 second game was enough to earn the Bowling Bombers the #2 seed and a first round bye heading into the second round.

The second round of the tournament was double elimination best of three bakers match play. The Bowling Bombers started off by sweeping Badin 2-0. Moeller was next and the luck was not on the Bombers side. Splits and poor pin carry ruined two good games and Moeller swept the Bombers. The Bombers needed to win to stay in against Roger Bacon, and a great 236 helped the Bombers to another 2-0 win. The fourth baker match would be hard fought against a tough Elder team. The Bombers won the first game handily 164-132, but Elder game back strong and tied it up with a 178 to St X’s 169 in the second game. The third game was close came down to the wire, but the Bombers pulled it out with a 191 to the Panther’s 181. The Bombers were in the semifinals against a quality LaSalle team and went down quick, 179-200. The next game was crucial to keep the Bombers’ hopes alive a solid 188 was enough to get a third game. The third game was tough, but the Bombers won, 169-157.

Due to the double elimination nature of the second round and Moeller’s perfect match play record, the Bowling Bombers were staring down the challenge of beating Moeller twice in bakers match play. The first game was strong, with the Bombers bowling one of their best bakers, but Moeller came out stronger and the Bombers dropped the first game, 191-210. In the second the splits piled up on Moeller and the Bombers remained consistent to win the second, 193-163. The third. and what proved to be the final, game, though, would not go the Bombers way. Bad luck and poor pin carry continued to plague the Bombers, while Moeller got strikes from every angle and won the third game, 148-163.

The second place finish means the Bombers hold the tie breaker advantage over LaSalle, the current co-leaders, and Elder, the current third place team. The Bomber continue their GCL season this Thursday with a tri-match against Fenwick and Roger Bacon at Eastern Lanes in Middletown.

Bombers Defeat GCL Rival Panthers
by SSID Mark Brockman, ‘12

The Bowling Bombers returned to the comforts of home and defeated the perennially tough GCL rival Elder Panthers. The pressure was great but the Bomber got the strong start they needed with the help of two super sophomores. Ben Weinberger and Jonny McQuitty were the surprising bright spots with a 226 and a 211 respectively. Matt Huber led the upperclassmen with a quality 200. The Bombers bowled a fantastic 1010 and were leading by 112 pins going into the second game. Senior Joey Bruns used both hands for a decent 232 and Ben Weinberger stayed on fire for a 203. Joey Bruns and Ben Weinberger had the high series with a decent for 428 and a great 429 respectively. The Bowling Bombers finished the individual round with a cumulative total of 1986 to the Panthers 1886.

The pressure was incredible with the Bowling Bombers nursing a 100 pin lead, but they started strong with a 202 and increased their lead to 131 pins. The Panthers made a run though, scoring 231 and 224 in the middle games, while the Bomber remained solid with a 188 and a 209. The Bombers wanted to finish on a high note and a 230 in the final game was enough to close out Elder. The Bowling Bombers defeated a great Elder team, 2815 - 2679.

The Bowling Bombers continue their season at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Colerain Bowl in the GCL tournament where they will be defending their 3 straight GCL tournament titles. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students.

Bomber Falter Against Crusaders

The Bombers were looking to start the New Year on a high note against GCL South rival Moeller. In their last match before Christmas Break, the Bowling Bombers defeated Moeller at Bentwood, but the New Year would open with travel to Moeller's home, Crossgate lanes. The lane conditions looked solid and the first game began with Moeller showing strong home lane advantage. The Bombers struggled but managed a 792 while Moeller rolled to an 858. The second game showed improvement by both teams. Senior Chris Hecht rolled a quality 202 and the Bombers managed a decent 858. Moeller also improved though, rolling a decent 965 and growing their lead to 173 pins.

The Bowling Bombers needed a strong showing in bakers, but the struggles continued. The third game was the lone bright spot, as the Bombers showed a great bakers 210, but the Bombers could not string any strikes together and it wasn't enough as the Bowling Bombers suffered their first GCL loss, Moeller - 2589 St Xavier - 2342.

Blue Team Falls Short Against Glen Este

The Blue Team went into their match Friday with the odds against them: they were facing a strong varsity opponent and were projected to lose by over 400 pins. After difficulties by many of the team members in navigating to Cherry Grove Lanes, Steven “Brill One” Brill, Joey “Master Bow-ling” Francis, and Anthony “Leeroy” Hughes sported 171, 180, and 190 points respectively in the first game. Steven Brill carried his strength into the second game with a 203, and Junior Andrew Cousineau showed a 20 pin improvement while the rest of the team slipped up on the heavily-oiled lanes.

Trailing the Trojans by 163 pins going into the bakers, Freshman Michael Rich put the team on his back, shooting four shots and striking all four times. Steven Brill, Joey Francis, Andrew Cousineau, and Jake Murnan also closed all of their frames in the bakers, scoring a 202 and a 218. Those impressive games were not enough to overtake Glen Este, and while the Bombers did not win, they bowled well, held their ground and lost by only 200 pins in a final 2638-2420.

Bowling Bombers Perform Admirably

The Bowling Bombers travelled to Dayton for the Team USA Experience. It was going to be a tough one with the Bombers bowling on three different lane patterns and a tough one it was. The Bombers came into the first game with confidence and looking to make a statement. Sophomore Jonny McQuitty led the Bombers with a high 191 and the first game finished with a cumulative 794. Flying under the radar in 13th place, the Bombers moved to a different pattern and the change proved to be helpful. Senior Joey Bruns made a solid effort with a 178, sophomore Ben Weinberger improved to a 173, and McQuitty was clutch again with a 186. The Bombers finished the second game with an 820 and a 1614 total. Only 40 pins behind the cut line going into baker game with the Bowling Bombers looking for quality shots and solid pinfall. Bowling Bomber Stay Perfect against Moeller

The Bowling Bombers rolled to a solid win against a good GCL South rival Moeller. The Bombers started strong as senior star Matt Huber generated a quality 259 game. Huber’s lane was high scoring as junior Eddie Runkel bowled a 224 on the same pair. Senior Joey Bruns bowled a good 213 and the Bombers finished the first game with a total pin fall of 1079 pins. The Crusaders were still threatening though with a 1026 so the Bowling Bombers were going to need a quality second game. The Bombers finished the first round with a total of 2060 pins felled behind Matt Huber’s fantastic 472 series.

Senior Steven Brill started the Bombers off with six strikes in a row, finishing with a 235 game. Andrew Cousineau rebounded from his first game with a 183 the second. Michael “Lefty 2.0” Rich, Sophomore Anthony “Leeroy” Hughes, and Jake “Turtles” Murnan also posted strong second games with 154, 164, and 185 respectively. Opposition came in the form of Woodward’s Alex Jenkins, one-upping Steven with the high game of the match, a 239. Nathan Shrum earned some of Jake Murnan’s coveted cookies by throwing strikes in the baker frames, and Joey Francis took up the position of anchor, netting the team an impressive 5 strikes and 4 spares in seven frames. Bowling Bombers Finish 3rd in Holiday Classic
By Mark Brockman ’12, SSID

Holiday festivities started early for the Bowling Bombers as they travelled to Western Bowl for the Holiday Classic. The Bombers were facing tough competition against in city rivals Elder and Oak Hills and out-of-state new comers Franklin Central. The Bombers started strong and took advantage of high scoring lane conditions with senior Chris Hecht bowling the high game of 257. Super sophomore Ben Weinberger rolled a great 246 and senior Matt Huber helped the team with his 203. After a 1068 in their first game the Bombers were looking good and wanted to continue that in the second game. Ben “Wonderboy” Weinberger continued to use his super powers for good as he remained solid with a 229. Seniors Joey Bruns and Matt Huber matched each other’s quality with a 225 for both. The second game finished with 1015 total pin fall and the Bombers finished individual play strong with a cumulative 1024 in the third game. Joey Bruns continued to bowl well with a 226 and Matt Huber found his groove with a 246. The Bowling Bombers went into the baker round with a total of 3107 and in 2nd place.

The competition was fierce coming into bakers with the Bombers leading 3rd place Oak Hills by 17 pins and only behind 1st place Franklin Central by 104 pins. The Bombers opened the first game with a quality 178, but fell behind Oak Hills and back into 3rd. The next three games were consistent for the Bombers with scores of 208-187-185, however they were still in 3rd behind red hot Oak Hills and freakishly good Franklin Central. The Bowling Bombers were going to need a great 5th baker if they wanted to have a chance, and they rose to the challenge with a whopping 266 pin game. That was enough to go ahead of Oak Hills and narrow the gap for first, but Oak Hills would not stop their surge in the 6th game. The Bombers bowling a decent 188, but lost their lead to Oak Hills and could not catch up with Franklin Central. The Bombers finished 3rd with a total tournament pinfall of 4319 pins.

The Blue Bowling Bombers Defeat Norwood

St. Xavier arrived at the L-shaped Stones Lanes on Thursday for a match against the green, rookie Norwood Indians. Jake “Turtles” Murnan started the first game with an impressive 210, the high score of the match. The rest of the team followed suit: Andrew Cousineau bowled a 189, Mike Brill bowled a 181, and the team netted 899 pins overall after the first round of individual games. The jet engines that propelled the Bombers through the first game malfunctioned during the second game, as Nathan Shrum’s 155 and Anthony Hughes’ 162 were not enough to counterbalance the team’s inexperience with the lane conditions at Stones. St. Xavier’s rally halted, and the total pin count of the game dropped down to 718. The Bombers were plagued with splits during the baker games, and a combination of bad breaks and low spare percentages further dampened the team’s spirits. Despite their struggles, the Bombers sported a hefty 724 pin, 2193-1469 victory, and look forward to improving their scores in their match against Woodward at Brentwood Bowl on Monday.

Bowling Bombers Too Much for GCL Rival La Salle

The Bowling Bombers were right at home at Brentwood Bowl as they trampled the La Salle Lancers. The Bombers were confident heading into today’s match with a perfect 4-0 GCL record and it showed. The Bombers took the first game as a great opportunity to have their first team 1000 game this season and finished with an impressive 1031. Joey Bruns ‘12 was on fire as his two-handed style gave him a fantastic 237. Matt Huber ‘12 could not stop smiling on his way to a great 226.  Edward Runkel ‘13 shined as he got an awesome 203. Ben Weinberger ‘14 finished game one with a 196 and senior Chris Hecht followed close behind with a 169.

The Bombers rolled into the second game with a 190-pin lead and had no intention of letting up. Wonderboy Weinberger found his super powers on his way to a 225 and a 421 series. Huber stayed consistent with a 214 to finish with a 440 series. Runkel could not stop his incredible play and the pin count showed it as he boosted a 439 series with a 236 pin second game.  Bruns would not be outshined though and he finished his 491 series with an insane 254 in the second game. The Bombers raised the bar even high with a cumulative second game total of 1051.

A 314 pin lead going into bakers made the confident Bowling Bombers even more confident and there was no hesitancy as the attacked the pins in the first baker game. Bruns carried his two hot hands into the anchor position and led the Bombers with strikes in his four opportunities. The Bowling Bombers finished their bakers strong with a 214, a 185, a 189, and a 206 for a series total of 794. The Bombers finished with match total of 2876 and defeated La Salle’s total of 2489 by 387 pin margin.

The Bombers were looking to improve on their second place finish in last year’s Kick-Off tournament. On a difficult lane pattern where good scores were going to be in the 180s the Bowling Bombers came out strong as senior Chris Hecht led team scoring with a 212. Matt Huber ‘12 smiled his way to a great 202 and the Bombers bowled a cumulative 883.

The heat wave continued in the second game as Hecht improved his incredible bowling with a 218. Joey Bruns ‘12 found his game with a 213 and the Bombers were adapting to the oil for a 919.

Super sophomore Ben Weinberger bowled a wonderous 214 and Bruns topped that with a 222 and the third game achieved a cumulative 933. Weinberger, Eddie Runkel ‘13, James Faisant ‘12, and Jonny McQuitty ‘14 were all utilized as subs for a sub series of 146-146-175. So after the qualifying 1st round, the Bowling Bombers were in 9th place with a 2735 qualifying them for the baker match play 2nd round of the tournament.

The 2nd round, a best-of-five baker series, looked promising for the 9th-seeded Bowling Bombers, who were to bowl 8th-seeded Wapakoneta ( the State runner-up last season). However, with lane conditions similar to the start of the tournament, the first game was a struggle for the boys in royal blue and black as they bowled a score of 153.  Other teams seemed to struggle as well, but Wapakoneta rolled an incredible 202. The Bombers kept plugging away in the 2nd baker game and finished with a solid 173, but they ran into a train as Wapakoneta bowled an immense 204. The Bowling Bombers had one last chance and were adjusting to the lanes well as they bowled a 195. It just was not meant to be as Wapakoneta rolled to 254. With this the Bowling Bombers were out of the tournament, finishing ninth, and learning a lot about what it will take to win state.

Bowling Bombers Stay Perfect

A long drive and wacky oil patterns were not enough to slow the Bombers as they won their second tri-match of the season to go 4-0. The Bowling Bombers were lead by sophomore Ben Weinberger’s 420 series. Joey Bruns ‘12 made use of a second hand to bowl a 418 series. Matt Huber ‘12 was all smiles and the light bulb went off for Eddie Runkel ‘13 as they both bowled a 390 series. Chris Hecht rolled in to the baker games with a solid 364 series.

With only one pin separating Badin and Chaminade-Julienne, the Bowling Bombers had been able to pull out to a 236 pin lead. The starting five stayed in and bowled a quality 206 in the first bakers. Now leading by 267 pins there was no letting off the gas and the Bombers stayed on fire with a 219 in the second game. Super subs James Faisant ‘12 and Jonny McQuitty ‘14 came in for the last two bakers and the Bombers finished with a 210 and a 167. The Bowling Bombers won by an impressive 301 pin margin with the final scores being St Xavier - 2784, Badin - 2483, and CJ - 2409.

Bowling Bombers Roll to Tri-Match Victory

The St. Xavier Bowling Bombers opened their season with a GCL Tri-Match victory versus Purcell Marian and Alter. The Bowling Bombers were lead by Matt Huber’s excellent 400 series with the match high game of 224. Seniors Chris Hecht and Joey Bruns were in no need of an extra hand bringing the heat as they bowled series of 399 and 396 respectively. Super sophomore Ben Weinberger bowled a quality 387 series. Junior Eddie Runkel, senior Steven Brill, and sophomore Jonny McQuitty rotated through the fifth spot in the lineup and bowled a collective 318 series.

The Bowling Bombers went into the match’s four baker games with a 290-pin lead. An opening baker of 237 all but clinched the win for the Bombers. Seniors Mike Brill and James Faisant were given their chance to shine in the final three bakers. Lane conditions finally caught up to the rolling Bombers and adjusting to new lanes and deteriorating oil proved difficult for the Bombers. The final three baker games came in with quality scores of 149, 170, and 123. The Bowling Bombers ultimately rolled to a 336-pin victory. The final tallies were St. Xavier - 2579, Purcell Marian - 2243, and Alter - 1757.
