BOY'S BASKETBALL
The Lakota East Boys Basketball Team defeated local Socastee High School (Myrtle Beach, SC) by a score of 61-38 on Tuesday, December 27th at the annual Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC . East scored the first 13 points of the game and never looked back in route to the win.
The Thunderhawks (2-3) led by as many as 15 in the opening half and held a 34-22 advantage at halftime. Socastee (7-2) scored the first basket of the second half cutting the gap to 34-25 on a 3-point basket. Lakota East responded with five unanswered points and went on to build leads as large as 23. Robbie Harpring paced Lakota East with 16 points. The Thunderhawks connected on 61.9 percent from the floor for the game and forced 19 Socastee Braves turnovers.
The prestigious tournament held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center features 4-5 days of action packed games.The Beach Ball Classic was founded in 1981 in order to bring more high school competition to the east coast. Dan D'Antoni is the founder of what is now considered one of the most prestigious high school basketball tournaments in the United States. Sixteens from across the United States participate in the annual Holiday Extravaganza including schools from as far away as Utah and Nevada.
The Thunderhawks will play a quarterfinal matchup against Bishop Gorman High School (Las Vegas, NV) this evening (12/29) at 5:15. The Gaels are the 2010 Nevada State Champions and 2009 Beach Ball Champs. For more results and information on the Hawks at the Beach Ball Classic click here.

Lakota East Girls Hold Off Firebirds
Drew Earns Career Win #100 The East and West girl's hoop teams went to battle on Wednesday night at the Hawks Nest. The Lady Hawks entered the contest undefeated at 4-0 while the Firebirds sported a 4-1 mark. The East squad was a little banged up and played without seniors Whitney Wyckoff and Tazzie Shaw. It didn't matter though as this night belonged to the Hawks. East never trailed in the game and rolled to a 61-54, third straight victory over their district rivals. Tonight would be a special night for their head coach too as Nikki Drew attained her 100th career win. |

The East starting lineup featured 4 seniors and a freshman. West began with 3 seniors, a junior and freshman.. The Hawks quickly ran out to a 10-0 lead including a 20+ foot bomb by Alyssa Grevenkamp. West finally got on the board with 2:43. East led at the end of the first quarter of play 21-5. The Hawks were up by as many as 18 in the 2nd quarter and the half ended with East ahead 35-22. The West defense tightened in the third quater allowing their offense to pull within 10 at the 2:32 mark. East maintained a 13 point lead as the quarter ended. |

The Lady Hawks had trouble putting the Firebirds away in the fourth. East led at one point by as many as 15, but to their credit, West fought back and got the score under ten with 2 minutes in the game. East held off the Firebird comeback effort in the final seconds to clinch another East-West meeting. Bernice Satterwhite, Alyssa Grevenkamp and Molly Blomer each scored 14 to lead East. Freshman Cydney Franklin added 10. |
