CHCA's Nick Lawley signs with Brown University

Lawley, an All-State quarterback who carries a GPA of 3.8 and has been named All-Academic four years running, plans to study either pre-medicine or engineering at Brown. “He truly understands what it means to be a student-athlete,” CHCA head football coach Eric Taylor said at the signing. “His dedication both to academics and football has been exemplary. It’s been a pleasure coaching him.”

COLLEGE SIGNINGS
A large contingent of talented Thunderhawk athletes were recognized at Lakota East High School's Spring Collegiate Signing Day event on Wednesday, May 18th. Twenty student-athletes representing a variety of sports were honored for their outstanding achievements during careers at East. The signings represented thousands of dollars in scholarship funds that will be offerred this to this class of standout Thunderhawks, helping them pursue post-secondary educational options.

In the months of February and May informal signing events are held to celebrate college-bound student-athletes who are headed to the next level. Earlier this year East recognized 10 additional seniors athletes who are accepting college scholarship offers.
Seniors "Turn the Page" With College Commitments
Lakota East recognized ten very talented senior athletes on Friday morning, February 4th who have earned the opportunity to continue their athletic careers while receiving a college education. The special recognition ceremony hosted by the East Athletic department afforded a contigent of parents, teammates, coaches, teachers and administrators a final opportunity to witness and congratulate these special athletes for all their accomplishments as they announced their formal college decisions.
For most of these Thunderhawk student-athletes it is a dream come true, but the result of years of sacrifice and hardwork. Fewer than 1% of all high school athletes advance to play their sport at the collegiate level. The college scholarships offerred to these students represents thousands of dollars that will help pay tuition, room and board, etc at some of the finest educational instituitions in the country. The East signees represented nine different interscholastic sports that included softball, girls swimming, baseball, track and field, boys and girls soccer, football, boys lacrosse, and girls tennis. A talented group of Mason Comet Cheerleaders will have the opportunity to continue their skills at the collegiate level next fall. Below are the profiles of five senior young ladies that will cheer for their college teams next school year.
Kelly Carns Kelly has cheered for Mason since her freshman year, and loved it so much! She has received the Green and White Award and the Comet Award. She will be attending Xavier University in the fall and will be cheering on the basketball squad. Annie Ruedger Annie has cheered at MHS for 4 years on the sideline and competition squads. Some of the awards she has received include the Comet Award in 2008-2009 for sideline, the Comet Award in 2010-2011 for sideline basketball and competition in a addition to the four year varsity letter for the competition squad. Next year she will be attending Miami University and cheering on the all-girl squad. Chelsea Shepherd Chelsea Shepherd will be cheering on the Ohio State University All Girls Competition Cheerleading squad next year. Chelsea earned 11 Varsity athletic letters at Mason High School in Cheerleading, Track and Field and Wrestling Statistics. She also earned 4 Academic Letters. She will graduate with Summa Cum Laude Honors. Chelsea has been involved in cheerleading for 9 years. She was chosen to cheer at the Capital One Bowl in Florida and the Chicago Thanksgiving Day Parade. Chelsea was a four year starter on the Varsity track team, she has received All GMC honors for high jump all four years. Chelsea maintains a 4.2 GPA. She received a full scholarship to The Ohio State University for her academic and leadership achievements. She will be majoring in aerospace/aeronautical engineering and minoring in business. Upon graduation she hopes to become an astronaut. Whitney Simmons Whitney Simmons cheered for MHS four years, two years as a Varsity Cheerleader. Whitney will be attending Utah State University cheering on the Co-ed squad. Katie Vanover Katie cheered both football and basketball all four years while at Mason High School (last two years on Varsity). She was a four-year varsity letterman on the MHS Competition Cheer Squad and chosen by her teammates to a Team Council position, helping them win two National titles. Katie’s individual achievements include: appointment to the Athletic Leadership Conference her sophomore year, two-time Comet Award recipient, two-time Green & White Award recipient, and MHS Athlete of the Week. Rounding out her senior year, Katie was selected as a McDonald’s Scholar Athlete. Katie is excited to attend Miami University where she will continue cheerleading on the All-Girl squad this coming fall. |

BOY'S BASKETBALL
Zach Baker, Milford High School senior, has signed his letter of commitment to play basketball for the College of Wooster majoring in Business. Baker is a 4-year varsity player for the Eagles who earned 1st Team All-FAVC honors in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He was also named FAVC “Player of the Year” as a senior helping to lead the 2010-11 Milford squad to a 16-5 record and a conference championship – something the program hasn’t seen since 1981. The 6’1” shooting guard averaged 13 points per game this season thanks in large part to a blistering 44% average behind the 3 point arc. Baker owns the Milford boys’ basketball records in most 3-point shots made in a career (134: 2007-11) and most 3-point shots made in a single season (46: 2008-09). He holds 3 of the top 5 records for 3-point shots made in a single season and is in the top 10 all-time statistically in two other categories (7th in most points scored and 2nd most steals). GIRL'S BASKETBALL
Jess Stankeveh, Milford High School senior, has signed his letter of commitment to play basketball for Wittenberg University. His major is ‘undecided’ at this time. Stankeveh is a 3-year varsity player for the Eagles who earned 1st Team All-FAVC honors in his senior season helping the 2010-11 Milford squad to a 16-5 record and a conference championship – something the program hasn’t seen since 1981. The 5’8” point guard averaged 9 points per game this season and led the team with 62 assists. He also attempted the most free throws (101) making those shots at a team best 89% average. Please find complete 2010-11 season stats attached. Stankeveh also earned varsity letters in football (2) and boys volleyball (1) during his tenure at MHS. Jess is the son of Marvin Stankeveh and Judy Hackmeister.

Brittany Prato, Milford High School senior, has signed her letter of commitment to play soccer for Ursuline College where she plans to study nursing. Prato was a two-year varsity defender for the Eagles, including captaining the squad last season. She earned both the “Best Defensive Player” and “Sportsmanship” awards as a senior. Prato was also a part of two FAVC Championships in her career and was named 1st Team All-FAVC in 2010. Brittany is the daughter of Teresa Boone and Scott Prato.

SOFTBALL
Kara Atwell, Milford High School senior, has signed her letter of commitment to play softball for Urbana University where she plans to study Accounting. Atwell was a two year starting catcher for the Eagles. After transferring in from Glen Este HS before the 2009 season, the Eagles backstop hit .342 in her career at Milford. Over the last three seasons, she has clubbed 11 doubles, 7 triples, and a home run en route to a .492 slugging percentage. The Eagles catcher also knocked in 50 RBI in her three years at Milford. She has made just four errors while managing the Eagles pitchers over the last two seasons. Atwell was named to the All-FAVC first team the last two seasons and the Southwest District All-Metro second team in 2010. In addition to her work on the field, Atwell received All-FAVC Academic honors all four years of her high school career. As a junior, Atwell was named to the Southwest District Underclassman All-Star team and earned a Milford Athletics Eagle Award for hard work, dedication and discipline in the sport of softball. Kara is the daughter of Liz and Lou Atwell. Congratulations!

Adam Edwards, Milford High School Senior, has signed his letter of commitment to bowl for Northern Kentucky University where he plans to study Information Technology. Adam was a 4-year varsity bowler for the Eagles who earned the “Eagle Award” twice for hard work, dedication and discipline in the sport of bowling. Adam also earned the “Sportsmanship Award” for integrity, honor and showing concern for others. Adam was named to the FAVC East 2nd Team as a senior. He is the first bowler from Milford High School to sign a letter of intent to bowl in college! Adam is the son of Lee Edwards and Beth Long. Congratulations!

Victoria (Tori) Calderhead, Milford High School Senior, has signed her letter of commitment to play soccer for Marshall University where she plans to study Political Science. Calderhead was a 3-year varsity defender for the Eagles and helped her squad win 3 consecutive FAVC division championships (2008, ’09, ’10). She was voted 1st Team All-League in both 2009 and 2010, All-SW OH 1st Team in 2009 and All-SW OH Honorable Mention in 2010. Her Milford team accolades include Best Defender in 2009 and Team MVP in 2010. Calderhead was also a 2-year varsity letter winner in basketball, a member of Student Council and a member of National Honor Society.
