St. Xavier Blue Team Wins Big Against The Big Blue
by Mike Brill ’12 SSID
The blue and black Bombers made the long trek to Columbia Lanes on Friday arriving just in time for their varsity match against Hamilton. Mike Brill started the game off with a strong 197, however, that was the low game for the team. Andrew Cousineau and Steven Brill both posted 199’s, while Joey Francis and Anthony Hughes put up a 211 and a 224 respectively, granting the Bombers a lofty 206 average and a 1030 total score for the first round of individual games. During the second game, conversely, they struggled to close their frames, and Nathan Shrum, Jake Murnan, and Michael Rich came off the bench to finish off games as the team rolled their way to a 797 score in the second round of individuals. The Big Blue drew close, and the Bombers’ lead was reduced to 1827-1792.
Joey Francis converted a 3-6-7 split, and role-player Michael Rich made a few clutch left handed spares in the baker frames, where the Bombers closed out Hamilton with one of their best baker performances of the season: 184, 233, 183, and 211. The final was a 2658-2557 victory for the Bombers, and the blue team looks forward at their JV match against Fairfield on Monday. Bowling Bombers capture GCL title
It was Senior Night for the Elder Panthers at Western Bowl as they took on our Bombers in the GCL season finale. The Bombers needed a victory to capture the title in the GCL South outright over LaSalle.
Before a packed house in the GCL rivalry match the Panthers jumped out to an early lead on the oil slick lanes with a 980 led by Sophomore Patrick Sullivan (251) and Senior Ben Brauch (206). The Bombers found themselves down 84 pins as they struggled to an 896 start with Seniors Matt Huber (209) and Joey Bruns (191) leading the way.
Game two went the Bombers way 940 to 859 as Varsity sub-bowler Junior Joey Francis led all scorers with a great 278 game. (Francis was an emergency call up to St. X's Varsity for the match as two Bombers were missing from the lineup due to illness and injury.) Patrick Sullivan continued his hot hand in game two and produced a 216 for Elder. After the first two games of regular bowling Elder held a slim 3 pin lead.
The Bombers used two strings of strikes in game one of bakers to win the first game 222 to 181 to take a 38 pin lead. Elder stormed back with a 211 on the right lane to reduce the St. X lead to 4 as the Bombers finished with a 177. Back on the right lane the Bombers finished game 3 with a string of 5 strikes and a 235 to stretch their lead to 57 pins as Elder bowled a solid 182. Game four started with a string of 4 strikes for the Bombers but Elder quickly responded with their own string when St. X had 2 splits and a miss in the 5th, 6th and 7th frames. Heading into the 8th frame Elder put themselves in position to possibly win until a stubborn 4 pin cost the Panthers any mathematical chance. Our boys in royal blue and black finished with the last 3 strikes to capture game 4 185 to 184 and a hard fought 58 pin victory. Final Score: St. X 2655, Elder 2597.
